Linc/Civility
26 inches x 39.5 inches, Linocut Print on BFK Rives GSM Archival Paper, 2022, Edition of 46
“Linc / Civility” is a modernized reimagined portrait of Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) or “Linc.” In the image, Lincoln wears a black T, gold chain, ball cap, and has the word “Linc” tattooed across his neck. Abe appears modern and cool, but wise and firm as the leader we all know. The word “Civility” is blazoned on his ball cap, a call to our better angels and to those that put nation before hyper-partisanship. Further immersing Lincoln in modernity, the background depicts a swirling wall of graffiti. The juxtaposition of old and new in this print is echoed in the combination of a traditional relief printing technique with modern elements, forcing the viewer to imagine Lincoln in our time, examine his lasting impact on our world today, and wonder at the role and life he might have lived if he was alive right now.

Frederick Douglass / Liberty
26 in. x 33 in. / 2021 / Linocut Print on BFK Archival Paper - “Frederick Douglass / Liberty” is a modernized reimagining of the American abolitionist, writer, orator, and statesman Frederick Douglass (1817-1895). In the portrait, he appears confident, determined, and courageous as we know him, but he is also remarkably hip and stylish in modern fashion and posed before a graffiti-scrawled space. This mix of old and new, echoed in the combination of a traditional relief printing technique with modern elements, forces the viewer to pull Douglass forward in time, examine his lasting impact on our world, and wonder at the role and life he might have lived if he was alive today.
